Anorectal disorders, such as hemorrhoids, fistula-in-ano, and fissure-in-ano, are common and often cause pain, bleeding, infection, and discomfort. While modern surgical procedures are available to treat these conditions, they may have some drawbacks, such as risk of infection, recurrence, incontinence, and scarring…

Ksharasutra: An Effective Solution for Anorectal Disorders

If you are looking for an effective way to treat your anorectal problems, you may want to consider Ksharasutra, an Ayurvedic surgical technique that has been practiced till today for its proven results.

What is Ksharasutra?

Ksharasutra is a minimally invasive Ayurvedic technique used for the effective management of anorectal disorders. It involves the use of a medicated thread, prepared by coating a surgical linen thread with herbs like Snuhi (Euphorbia neriifolia), Apamarga (Achyranthes Aspera), and Haridra (turmeric).

The medicated thread acts as a chemical cauterizer and cuts through the unhealthy tissue while promoting healing and preventing infection. The thread also helps to drain the pus or discharge from the affected area and reduces inflammation and pain.

Advantages of Ksharasutra Over Modern Surgical Options

Ksharasutra has several advantages over modern surgical options for treating hemorrhoids and fistula-in-ano:

  • Less invasive: Ksharasutra is less invasive than modern anorectal surgeries.

  • Preservation of anal sphincter: The muscles that support the anus and help control bowel movements are not dissected during Ksharasutra therapy. This reduces the risk of anal incontinence.

  • Lower recurrence rate: The recurrence rate of anorectal disorders after Ksharasutra therapy is minimal.

  • Cost-effective: Ksharasutra therapy is a cost-effective method for treating anorectal disorders.

How is Ksharasutra done?

The procedure of Ksharasutra is done under local anesthesia and takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Depending on the condition, the procedure may vary slightly.

In Hemorrhoids, the pile mass is brought out of the anal orifice using forceps, given an incision at the mucocutaneous junction, slightly pulled, and ligated with Ksharasutra at its base. The ligated pile mass is then applied with Yashtimadhu taila or ghrita.

In Fistula-in-ano, a malleable probe with the Ksharasutra in its groove is passed through the external opening of the fistula to the internal one. The Ksharasutra is then tied around the fistulous tract and left in place.

In Fissure-in-ano, the Ksharasutra is applied around the anal sphincter after making a small incision at the posterior midline.

The Ksharasutra is replaced with a new one every week until complete healing. The patient can resume normal activities partially within 5-6 hours, and usual routine within 4-5 days after the procedure.

How does Ksharasutra work?

Ksharasutra works by applying pressure through the ligation of the thread. This causes mechanical strangulation of blood vessels and tissues, leading to pressure necrosis of any swelling, such as piles or fistula. The thread acts like a vehicle for the medicines like snuhi, apamarga, haridhra etc., to reach the site by coating on the thread rendering anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, wound healing activities in the disease tracts.

In addition to this, Ksharasutra promotes drainage of discharge or pus from the tract, which helps clear the infection. Over time, this leads to healing of the infected tract.

What are the benefits of Ksharasutra?

Ksharasutra has many advantages over conventional surgery, such as:

  • Do not require prolonged hospitalization or general anesthesia.

  • It does not cause any damage to the anal sphincter or mucosa.

  • Its effectiveness can be seen with low recurrence rate and high success rate.

  • Minimal post-operative complications and pain.

Who can undergo Ksharasutra?

Not suitable for patients who have rectal prolapse, tuberculosis, pregnancy, carcinoma rectum, or other related conditions.

It is important to consult with a trained professional in Ayurvedic Parasurgical procedures before considering this treatment. The professional will assess your condition and determine if you are eligible for Ksharasutra. They will also guide you through the pre-operative and post-operative care and follow-up.
