How is Kati Basti Performed?

Kati Basti is usually performed by a trained Ayurvedic practitioner in a clinic or a spa. The procedure involves the following steps:

1. Preparatory stage where you are asked to lie down on your stomach on a massage table. The therapist will clean your lower back area with a cotton cloth dipped in warm water..

2. Main stage where the therapist will create a dough ring around your lower back area. The ring should be about 4 to 5 inches in diameter and 1 to 2 inches in height covering your lumbar and sacral regions of your spine. The therapist will then pour warm medicated oil into the ring until it fills up completely.

3. Final stage where the therapist will remove the dough ring and wipe off any excess oil from your skin. He or she will then cover your lower back with a towel or a blanket and let you rest for about 10 minutes.

You may be advised to avoid bathing or showering for a few hours after the treatment to allow the oil to absorb into your skin. You may also be given some dietary and lifestyle recommendations by our doctors to enhance the effects of the treatment.
